Blitzortung Lightning Detection Network

Blitzortung.org" is a lightning detection network for locating electromagnetic discharges in the atmosphere (lightning discharges) with VLF receivers based on the time of arrival (TOA) and time of group arrival (TOGA) method. We are a community of station operators who send their data to the computing servers, programmers who develop and/or implement algorithms for locating and visualizing of sferic positions, and people who assist in any way to keep the system running. There is no restriction on membership. All people who keep the network in operation are volunteers. There are no fees, terms and conditions, and no contracts. If a station stops pooling its data, the server stops providing the access to the raw data for the user of that station.

Nexstorm Lightning Detection Software

NexStorm is a Microsoft Windows lightning detection interface application for the Boltek Corporation line of lightning detectors. NexStorm seamlessly combines advanced analysis and display features with Internet integration and interprocess communication functionality in ways that makes this application not only unique, but also the most versatile and flexible software package for lightning detection that you will find.

Boltek Lightning Detection Hardware

StormTracker uses a direction-finding antenna to receive and locate the radio signals produced by lightning. The strength of the received signal is used to calculate approximately how far the strike is away. The combination of direction and distance allows the strike to be plotted onto a radar-like screen, the receiver location being the center of the screen with distance increasing outwards from the center.

About Perth

Perth was founded in 1829 largely because the British feared the French would establish a colony in Western Australia. In 1827 Captain James Stirling (1791-1865) sailed to the Swan River in his ship HMS Success. Stirling believed the area would be ideal for a settlement. He persuaded the British government to found a colony there, independent of the colony in New South Wales. Perth was named after the birthplace of Sir George Murray who was British Secretary of State for the Colonies when the city was founded in 1829. (However, Murray was not actually born in the town of Perth. He was born in Perthshire). However, this colony was not to be manned by convicts. Instead, the government would sell land cheaply to private citizens. (Ignoring the Indigenous Australians who lived there). The first ship to arrive in the Swan River Estuary was HMS Challenger captained by Charles Fremantle (1800-1869). On 2 May 1829, he claimed the whole of Australia outside New South Wales for Britain. Stirling arrived in June. He ran the new colony by the Swan River from 1829 to 1832 and from 1834 to 1838. The new colony developed on two sites. The port town was named Fremantle in honor of the Captain. Perth itself was founded on 12 August 1829. To mark the event a tree was cut down on the site of Kings Park. Soon there was a conflict between the European settlers and the Indigenous Australians. The indigenous people were driven off their land and many of them were killed. The conflict culminated in the Battle of Pinjarra.

A little about who runs this site

This website and the weather station and all other monitoring equipment is owned and maintained by a local weather enthusiast. Our family have been volunteer firefighters for over 20 years, with the husband and father working in emergency services. We live in the area and decided to share the data we collect with the public for those who may have a similar interest or just want some localised weather data. The website has extensive data available, not just locally but world-wide and offers links to official sites and other enthusiast sites including Space Weather, ship and aircraft tracking and more.

If you would like to help out be leaving a small donation that would be very much appreciated. This will go towards the internet costs of uploading the data and hosting the site. Many thanks!
